Evaluating School Counselors Webinar
January 12, 2021 4:00-5:00 PM
Presented by: Dr. Hennessey Lustica, Community Schools Mental Health Director at Sodus CSD & Assistant Professor at Medaille College
Do your administrators understand the unique responsibilities of your role as a school counselor?
Are your observations and annual professional performance reviews evaluated fairly and based on the important work you do each day with students, families, staff, and the greater school community?
Research continues to demonstrate the need for an increase in school counselors at every level – elementary, middle, and high school - yet practice indicates a lack of administrative understanding regarding the expertise, responsibilities, and scope of practice for school counselors. Efforts to increase administrative understanding to date have focused on grassroots advocacy initiatives; presentations by state school counseling associations, social media blasts, and materials to promote our role. While important to increasing administrative understanding, the catalyst for significant change at the building level is to provide a solution which is meaningful for both administrators and school counselors: the implementation of a research based, best-practice evaluation tool.
COVID-19 has thrust social emotional learning and wellness into the forefront of district initiatives. As school counselors, we are uniquely positioned to mitigate the impact of this prolonged trauma using best-practice counseling skills and interventions. Thus, it has never been more critical for administrators to focus evaluation for school counselors on the work we are trained to do. In addition to quickly helping administrators assess our important work, we need a tool which highlights professional development and areas of our comprehensive plan that are being executed well and those that need support.
This presentation will introduce (or reintroduce) you to the first co-created and validated assessment tool for district administrators to evaluate school counselors, the L-SCET. Rooted in the ASCA National Model, SEL standards, and best-practice counseling skills, the L-SCET was developed with district administrators and school counselors across the United States. We invite you to learn about the research behind this tool, hear stories about evaluation from your colleagues in NYS and across the United States, understand how the L-SCET can help shape best practice, enhance comprehensive school counseling programs, and drive professional development – all critical components to increasing student academic, college and career, and social emotional wellness.
